Da Hong Pao, also known as "Big Red Robe," is a premium oolong tea that is grown on the steep slopes of the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province, China. Legend has it that the tea was named after a group of traveling scholars who were cured of their illnesses after drinking the tea.
This dark, rich tea has a distinctive roasted flavour with hints of caramel and honey, and a smooth, velvety texture. It is made from leaves harvested from ancient tea trees that are carefully roasted over charcoal fires to bring out the tea's natural flavour and aroma.
The tea is sourced exclusively from the Da Hong Pao reserved cultivate region, where it is grown and harvested using traditional techniques that have been perfected over centuries. This meticulous cultivation process ensures that every leaf is of the highest quality, resulting in a tea that is truly a work of art. With its unique rocky flavour, which combines floral, spice, and smoke notes in perfect harmony, Big Red Robe is a tea that is sure to delight even the most discerning tea connoisseurs. So if you're looking for the ultimate tea experience, look no further than our Big Red Robe - it is truly the epitome of high-end, premium tea.
Summary
Origin: Wuyi Mountain, Fujian Province
Aroma: Warm roasted aroma with delightful floral flavour
Liquor: Orange yellow
Taste: Smooth liquid carries roasted aroma with floral scent
Storage: Store in airtight, opaque packaging
Straight out of the package there is an unexpected dill pickle scent - perhaps from the package? - but it disappears completely as soon as the tea is added to the warm pot and did not transfer to my teaware…
This Da Hong Pao really shines when brewed gongfu style, in duanni with high tea/water ratio, 100° water and quick steeps. The roast fragrance is delightful, and early infusions have rich flavour almost like coffee but without any hint of bitterness. In subsequent infusions, the roast flavour softens while the fragrance remains, and the mineral quality shines through- cooling & grounded, like the scent of river rocks after rain, imparting a calm & focused qi.
Or if you prefer to brew Western style, it makes a satisfying morning cup (or three or more), with a roasted, full taste that instills a focused, grounded feeling- no caffeine jitters here!
This has the potential to become one of my favourites - thanks iCha!
