Recently, as matcha powder has gained popularity worldwide and its health benefits have become more widely recognized, many customers have started purchasing matcha to prepare at home. Traditional matcha powder is non-instant and requires proper preparation: it is prepared with a bamboo whisk called a chasen. But what if you don’t have one at home? Don’t worry, you can still enjoy a delicious cup of matcha with tools you already have in your kitchen.
Beyond taste, science also supports its value: a PubMed Central (PMC) review highlights that matcha's high EGCG content may enhance cognitive function, improve insulin sensitivity, and offer neuropcrotecive effects.
If you are new to matcha, make sure you start with high-quality matcha powder for the best taste and texture.
At ICHA TEA, during our matcha product development, we discovered many quick and convenient ways to prepare matcha. In this guide, we would like to share easy methods to make matcha without a whisk.
Sift Your Matcha First.
No matter which method you use, the key to smooth matcha is sifting the powder. Matcha is very fine and can easily clump. By sifting before mixing, you’ll get a smoother drink with a better texture and taste.
Shaker Bottle/Protein Shaker Cup
This is the simplest method, the one ICHA TEA used most often during our product development, and also the easiest for everyone to try at home.
Steps:
1. Add 1-2 teaspoons of sifted matcha powder into a clean shaker bottle.
2. Pour in 2-3 tablespoons of cold water.
3. Shake vigorously until the powder dissolves.
4. Add hot water or ice to make matcha tea, or pour it over milk to create a matcha latte.
Handheld Milk Frother
You may see this method used in some coffee shops.
Steps:
1. Sift matcha into a matcha bowl.
2. Add a splash of warm water.
3. Use the frother to blend until no clumps remain and a light foam forms.
4. Add more hot water or steamed milk to taste.
Blender or Immersion Blender
For a larger serving or extra creamy texture, try this method.
Steps:
1. Add sifted matcha and water/milk into a blender.
2. Blend for 15-20 seconds until smooth and frothy
3. Pour into your cup and enjoy.
At ICHA TEA, we believe matcha preparation should be simple and joyful, whether you have a bamboo whisk or not. Try one of these methods at home and discover your favorite way to enjoy matcha drinks.
